Verse of the Day: Revelation 3:20

Scripture:

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with Me.”
— Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

A Knock, Not a Kick-In

One thing I love about this verse is how personal it feels. Jesus doesn’t say He’s breaking the door down. He says He’s standing thereknocking. That means He’s patient. That means He’s present. That means He’s not waiting for you to “get perfect” before He comes close.

Sometimes we picture God as someone who only shows up when we’ve got it together—when our attitude is right, our habits are clean, our mood is steady, our past is behind us. But Revelation 3:20 flips that idea on its head. It’s not “fix yourself and then I’ll come in.” It’s “I’m already here… will you open the door?”

What Does “Open the Door” Look Like in Real Life?

For me, opening the door isn’t always some big spiritual moment. A lot of times it looks like small, honest choices:

  • A quick prayer when my mind starts racing
  • Owning my feelings instead of stuffing them
  • Asking for help instead of isolating
  • Turning worship on instead of turning bitterness up
  • Letting God in even when I’m tired, irritated, or ashamed

Because if we’re being real, some days the “door” isn’t locked with rebellion… it’s blocked by exhaustion, fear, pride, or old pain. Sometimes it’s not even that we don’t want God—sometimes we’ve just gotten used to surviving on our own.

The Meal Means Relationship

Jesus says if we open the door, He’ll come in and eat with us. That’s not a quick handshake and a lecture. That’s relationship. Meals are where people talk. Laugh. Cry. Unload. Connect. There’s something about that picture that feels like God saying:

“I’m not here to shame you. I’m here to sit with you.”

And that’s a word somebody needs today, including me. God isn’t hovering over your life with disappointment. He’s standing close, inviting you back into peace, back into trust, back into connection.

Today’s Takeaway

If you’ve felt distant from God lately, this verse is a reminder: He hasn’t moved. The knock is still there. The invitation is still there. And it only takes one honest moment to open that door again.

Prayer

Lord, help me hear You when You’re knocking. Give me the courage to open the door even when I don’t feel worthy, even when I’m overwhelmed, even when I’m stuck in my own head. Come in and bring Your peace into every room of my life. Amen.
