🙏 A Wake-Up Call from the Book of Amos

By Josh Bridges

Today at church, we talked about the Book of Amos — and man, it hit home. Amos isn’t one of those books people talk about every Sunday, but it’s one that speaks straight to the heart. It’s a wake-up call, plain and simple.

Amos was a prophet sent to warn the people of Israel that they had drifted away from God. They were living comfortably, saying the right things, but their hearts weren’t in the right place. They had forgotten what truly mattered — justice, mercy, and walking humbly with God.

As I sat there listening, I couldn’t help but think about my own life. There were times when I said I believed in God, but my actions didn’t show it. I was living for myself, stuck in addiction, chasing things that only left me empty. Amos reminded me that faith isn’t just about words — it’s about how we live, how we treat others, and how we keep our hearts in line with God’s will.

Recovery has taught me a lot about honesty — with myself, with others, and with God. The message of Amos fits right into that. It’s about returning to truth, cleaning house spiritually, and getting back to what matters: compassion, humility, and faith.

I think that’s what God wants from all of us — not perfection, but authenticity. He wants hearts that are real, lives that reflect His love, and people willing to turn back when they’ve gone astray.

If you’re in a season of rebuilding, don’t be afraid to look inward. Ask yourself where your heart is. God isn’t here to condemn you — He’s calling you back home, just like He did through Amos.

Sometimes the hardest truths are the ones that set us free.

Reflection: What’s one area of your life where you can draw closer to God today?

Verse to remember:
“Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you.” — Amos 5:14
